CHAPTER NINE

SIERRA

“Sierra, welcome to my home.” He stretched his arms toward me.

A smile curled my lips. “Ambrose, thank you for making time to see me.” I wrapped my arms around his neck.

The scent of his sandalwood and vanilla cologne swept up my nose. Ambrose smelled nice. But no one could top my husband’s delicious scent. In my opinion, anyway.

I stepped back. The first three buttons on his dress shirt were undone, drawing attention to the dark chest hair. Averting my gaze, I marveled at the gold stone columns in the grand atrium. “You have a beautiful home.”

His green eyes lit up. “Thank you.” He smoothed a hand over his dark hair.

The cuffs of the long-sleeve violet checkered shirt were folded right below his elbows.

“I hope you brought your appetite.” He held his muscled arm out and I looped mine around his.

“We’ll see. I had a bad day,” I admitted.

“We can talk about it in the dining room.” He was a striking man. Ambrose wasn’t married. I bet he had a ton of ladies, though.

He pulled out a chair. I sank into the black velvet seat trimmed in gold. The chairs around the table reminded me of the eighteenth century.

“We can discuss the benefactors I found for the next charity event, or you can tell me what’s on your mind.”

The butler greeted me after placing the last serving dish on the long table that could seat forty people. He was an older pale faced gentleman with a head full of gray hair and bushy brows.

“May I get either of you anything else?” He stood clad in his black and white butler uniform.

“No, that will be all, Albert,” Ambrose stated.

I smiled at the butler before he vacated the dining room.

“I bet your dinner parties are top-notch.” Bringing the red wine to my lips, I grinned.

He flashed that handsome smile. “Everyone has a great time. My dinner guests usually pay upwards of a quarter of a million dollars.”

I almost choked on my wine. “It’s mandatory that your guests pay to have dinner with you?”

“Not tonight. Only at dinner parties. My guests donate to the charity that I sponsor for that evening.” He swept a hand over his thick raven beard.

“That’s a wonderful idea, Ambrose. This is why you run circles around my benefits.”

“What we share isn’t a competition. We share a love of helping others. I love when both of us can collect a shit ton of money to give to a wonderful cause.”

I raised my glass. “Cheers to that.”

We clanked glasses.

“Prepare your plate and tell me what’s got you upset. You’re always upbeat every time I see you.”

My burner buzzed.

I know. “Please excuse me.” My eyes fell on the phone screen.

Jasper: Sierra, I’m supposed to check out the property.

Me: It’s unnecessary. My colleague is harmless. We’re going over new benefactors. Tell your boss I’m not in danger.

Jasper: If you’re not out in an hour, I’m coming in.

Me: Understood, Jasper.

“Is everything ok?”

“Yes, my bodyguard was checking to make sure I’m safe. I hadn’t told him my colleague’s a man.
